FAQs

Who are Care is Central?

We are a local authority trading company, known as a LATCo, set up by Central Bedfordshire Council to deliver care and independent living services across Bedfordshire. Unlike a private care group, we do not exist to generate profit for shareholders. Any surplus we make is reinvested back into care and community services here in Central Bedfordshire. We run two care homes, Marigold House in Leighton Buzzard and Honeysuckle House at Red Kite Meadows in Flitwick, alongside independent living schemes and community spaces that are open to everyone, not just residents.

What types of care do you offer?

We provide residential care for people who need support with day-to-day living, alongside independent living schemes for people who want their own home with support close by. We also offer short-term respite stays for families who need a break or some breathing room while they plan next steps. If you are not sure which fits your situation, tell us a little about what is going on and we will help you work it out.

How much does care cost?

Our fees start from a clear figure and cover your room, meals, activities and day-to-day care. What you personally pay depends on your financial circumstances: some families fund care themselves, others receive support through Central Bedfordshire Council, and many are somewhere in between. We would rather talk you through your specific situation than give you a generic number, so please get in touch and we will be upfront with you about the figures.

What funding or financial support is available?

If your savings and assets are below £23,250, Central Bedfordshire Council may contribute towards your care, and if they are below £14,250, your capital will not be taken into account at all. To find out where you stand, the council will need to carry out a needs assessment followed by a financial assessment. Their adult social care team can be reached on 0300 300 8000, and we are happy to help you through the process alongside them.

How quickly can my loved one move in?

This depends on availability and on any assessments that need to take place first, but we understand that many families are dealing with an urgent situation, such as a hospital discharge or a sudden change at home. Tell us your timescale when you get in touch and we will be honest with you about what is realistically possible.

Can we visit before making a decision?

Yes, and we would always encourage it. Visiting in person, meeting our team and getting a feel for the home makes a real difference, especially for the person who will be living with us. Both Marigold House and Red Kite Meadows welcome visitors, and our on-site coffee shops mean a first visit can simply be a cup of coffee and a look around, with no pressure attached.

Do you offer short stays or respite care?

Yes. Our short-term respite stays give families a break, or the person themselves a chance to try residential care before committing to a permanent move. Get in touch to talk through availability and how it works.

What happens after I submit an enquiry?

A member of our team will contact you, usually within one working day, to talk through your situation and answer any questions. There is no obligation at this stage. We simply want to understand what you need and help you decide what is right for your family.
